Choosing variety or
code
Variety is sociolinguistic term referring to language in
context. A variety is aset of linguistic forms used under spesific social
circumstances, i.e., with a distinctive social distribution. Variety is
therefore a broad term which includes different accents, different linguistic
styles, different dialects and even different language which contrast with each
other for social reasons.
The factors that lead someone to choose one code rather than
another:

Kind of social factors like
social distance, status, formality, andfunctional

Chracteristics of the users
·
The other people he is
talking to or own linguistic repertoire
Domains of language use in area of human activity in which
one particular variety or combination of several variety used. Typical domains
in a speech community are family, region, education, employment, and
friendship. Meanwhile, domain spesific factors are addressee, setting and
topic.

Diglossia
Polyglossia is the situation where more than two language
are used in community, for example a Polyglossic country is Singapore, where
one can speak dialect of Chinese to
her/his parents and speak English with friends at school.

Code-switching or
Code mixing
Code-switch is where someone uses one language at one moment
and then switch to another language in complete sentence. The reasons for
code-switch are change of social situation, change of topic, affective and
methaporical.
