Language in Australia
Although there is no official language in Australia, the language
most widely spoken is English, which is rooted as the national language, which
is in accordance with the real practice (de facto) since Australian
independence. Australian English is the
most widely spoken type of variety of English, referred to as Australian
English because of its accent, rich range of words, spelling and grammar which
differs from some other types of English. According to the 2016 mental census,
only English is the most widely spoken language, accounting for nearly 70% of
the total population of Australia. Then, other languages that are most
commonly used are: Standard Chinese (2.5%), Arabic (1.4%), Cantonese (1.2%),
Vietnamese (1.2%) and Italian (1.2%). %).
The first and second lineage observers who live in Australia are
classified as bilingual because they are already proficient in speaking English
as the Australian national language and also speaking English as a
demonstration of their identity. This should be applied by parents who are
foreign migrants in Australia.
There are more than 250 indigenous languages of Australia that
are thought to have existed for a long time when Europeans first made contact
with each other in Australia. Now, no more than about 20 indigenous languages
there are still chosen as intermediaries for daily communication of any age
group. Meanwhile, there are also as many as 110 other indigenous languages
which on average are only spoken in a limited manner for the elderly. Based
on the final results of the mental census in 2006, it is known that 52,000
indigenous languages of Australia who are identified as indigenous there, up
to 12% use indigenous Australian languages - at least one indigenous language
- as a means of intermediary for daily speech in their respective homes. . Australia already has a language set called
Auslan, from which deaf people in Australia about 5,500 people can make
interrelationships with each other as the only intermediary of contact that is
very needed and important at once.
Indigenous Australian Language
It is believed that the languages of Australia's indigenous
people number close to 400 when Europeans made contact with the local
population for the first time. Most of these languages have disappeared and
are also increasingly critical, so that only fifteen languages are still
spoken by all age groups of the indigenous Australian ethnic groups concerned.
As many as 50,000 indigenous Australians (0.25%) make a number of
the languages of the living indigenous people in Australia as their main
intermediary of contact. The Australian sign language is referred to as Auslan
which is the main intermediary of contact and also takes precedence for deaf persons
of about 10,000 people. So far, the foreign language most spoken in Australia
is Standard Chinese, with a total number of 715,000 people in 2016.
Currently, the indigenous languages of Australia that are most
widely used as intermediaries for communication are Upper Aranda, West Torres
Strait Islander, Tiwi, Walmajarri, Warlpiri and Wati.
