Journal Review – Discussion


In this occasion, I would like to share the result of my discussion with my partner about journal article that we have read before. The contents of our discussion are about “What is the reason made you choose the skill?” and “What are examples of method that can be applied in learning based on your skill?” The contents will be explain below:

What is the reason that made you choose the skill?

Journal article that I have read is about reading skill, I choose it because I think it is one form of mastery of English , the ability to read. Advantages of Reading Skill are vocabulary mastery will increase fast, understanding sentence structure will form by itself, and the grammar will form itself. By understanding all three, actually we will also easily master the ability to speak. Learning reading skills is an investment in English. The reason is we can get a lot of information and awareness by reading. It is essential to read in English education when reading the text, knowing the content of the text and incorporating what reader knows. Individuals’ ability to comprehend text is affected by their capacity to interpret knowledge.

Meanwhile, my partner choose writing skill because he think writing skill is difficult to master. There are a lot of students who are still poor in improving their ideas in writing. For example, when students were doing a task like developing a topic sentence into a clear paragraph, content of their paragraph is not coherence. In line with this, that’s why most of my reviewed journal is about how to improve our writing skills. After reading the journal that I have review, I hope students are able to write correctly.

What are examples of methods that can be applied in learning related skills you choose?

Reading skills, the examples are:
1.        Present methods of analysis of read instructions aim to explain mechanisms of comprehension by products of awareness and neglect. Students each offer inadequate opportunities to teach the students English. Also, both teachers and learners make use of Indonesian to make matters worse during their English lessons.
What educators should do now is carefully shift the learners' emphasis from emphasizing consistency in oral communication to improving their speaking ability.
2.      Flipped class mode has great potential for promoting the improvement of reading skills in an ESP course. The technique, if correctly and adequately applied, will enrich the conventional learning process and make it more efficient and student-centric.

Meanwhile In writing skills, the example of method that we can apply in teaching is IDEAL Frameworks, We share an in-class exercise to introduce students to the IDEAL structure and implement it through a peer-feedback activity for writing samples. Another example is Improving students’ writing skill through journal article, this review article is intended to address ways of developing the writing skills of students by publishing an article in a journal. The outcome of reviewing numerous current relevant literature can be inferred that writing skills can be described differently based on pedagogical objectives and approach.
