ENGLISH TEACHING METHODS

The English learning method has a very important role in English learning activities. There are many students who are able to achieve good performance because they are taught using appropriate English learning methods. Conversely, most students feel bored and reluctant to learn English because the methods are so boring.

An English learning method is the key to learning. If a teacher applies a method that is less precise and boring, then the class is finished. On average, students will tend to get bored and dislike English classes that last for almost two hours.

What methods of learning English are required by a teacher? Below, we provide information on 3 learning methods that are required to be known.

Grammar Translation Method

This method is usually abbreviated with GTM. Is a method that is the longest in the world of learning a foreign language. Indonesia itself still uses the GTM method from the time English teaching takes place until now. What is GTM?

This is a method where grammar or grammar is emphasized more. In addition to grammar, there are also translates or subtitles which are most often used to teach vocabulary. The teacher will teach material about grammar using formulas, and then use language transfer when teaching reading, writing, and vocabulary in English.

Just like its name suggests, this method of teaching English is grammar heavy and relies a lot on translation. This is the traditional or 'classical' way of learning a language and it's still commonly used when learning some languages. Some countries prefer this style of teaching and the main idea behind this method is that the students learn all grammar rules, so they're able to translate a number of sentences. This is particularly common for those students who wish to study literature at a deeper level.

Audio Lingual Method

Audio Lingual Method is an English learning method where the teacher practices short dialogues that cannot be translated by students. The teacher gives dialogue to students to follow the dialogue and students guess the purpose of the dialogue from the expression, dialogue poses, and various things practiced by a teacher.

Students are invited to memorize dialogues that even they do not understand the writing and clear meaning. Dialogue and memorize it in a short time without having to read or write it. After students memorize, then they are given the words in the dialogue. Students read, then they write it.

This method is effective for making students learn English quickly. They accept language like infancy. Because the language that is conveyed through dialogue is meaningless and they know their intentions only from facial expressions, dialogue poses, and gestures. After listening, students are invited to speak and memorize with provisions to learn the meaning of the word without a clear meaning. Then, reading and writing activities will only take place after students hear and speak.

Total Physical Response

Total Physical Response, otherwise known as TPR is an approach that follows the idea of 'learning by doing'. Beginners will learn English through a series of repetitive actions such as "Stand up", "Open your book", "Close the door", and "Walk to the window and open it." With TPR, the most important skill is aural comprehension and everything else will follow naturally later.

Beginning the teacher does some work such as walking, sitting, holding ears, putting a ruler, or writing. But before the teacher does all the work, he orders himself first with English instructions.

After a number of repetitions through the instructions carried out and carried out by himself, at a later stage the teacher gives orders to students with the same instructions as himself earlier. Through these commands, students are expected to be able to carry out in accordance with the instructions and examples given earlier. Of course, the teacher does not carry out the order and he only provides corrections.

Those are 3 methods of learning English that are widely used and are required to be known in detail. Hopefully the information above can help you.
